When should I replace my smoke detector?

When should I replace my smoke detector?

Your smoke detector stands on guard all day, every day ready to alert you to a fire. Not surprisingly, all that work eventually wears these devices out and it happens faster than you might think. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 17 percent of fire deaths happen in properties where the smoke detector failed. Knowing when to replace your smoke detector ensures you\’ll always have a reliably functioning device protecting your family.

Optimize Your Smoke Alarm System

Before you replace your smoke detectors, make sure you have the right amount in the right locations. If you\’re lacking, it\’s worth taking the time to plan a complete smoke alarm system. For the highest level of protection, choose a hard-wired or wireless interconnected system. In these systems, when one detector senses smoke, all the alarms in your home sound. A knowledgeable professional electrician can design a system for you and install the smoke detectors in the optimal locations.

Every level of your home, including the basement, should have at least one smoke detector. Smoke rises, so mount your detectors on your ceilings or high on your walls, not more than 12 inches away from the ceiling. A detector should be installed within 10 feet of every bedroom or sleeping area. If a floor has no sleeping area, place the detector near the most used room or by the stairs leading to the next floor up. In the basement, place the detector on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs.

Keep your smoke alarms at least 10 feet from the kitchen or bathroom to minimize the risk of false alarms from cooking fumes or bathroom steam. Where possible, avoid placing them near windows, exterior doors, and air vents. The drafts these create can blow smoke away from the detector and delay its response to a fire.

Test and Replace Smoke Detectors on Time

Once a month, test your smoke detector by holding down the test button for at least five seconds or until the alarm sounds. If the alarm is weak or doesn\’t sound at all, replace the batteries and test again. If fresh batteries don\’t help, it\’s time for a new detector.

After testing is a good time to dust or vacuum your smoke detector to clean out debris that could clog the sensor.

Even when the test is successful, replace the batteries at least once a year. A beeping or chirping noise from your detector is also a sign the device needs fresh batteries. Alkaline batteries lose power over the year and while old batteries might power the alarm during a test, they could still be too weak to sufficiently power it during a real fire. If your smoke detector has a 10-year or \”long-life\” lithium battery, you won\’t have to replace the battery during the detector\’s life span.

Replace each smoke detector after 10 years. This includes lithium-battery alarms and the alarms in hard-wired systems, as well as detectors that still test as functional. The test button only confirms the battery, wiring, and alarm horn are working, but it tells you nothing about the sensor. In many detectors, the sensors lose sensitivity over time or develop a buildup of dust that impairs their sensitivity. Ionization smoke detectors become more sensitive as they age, causing more false alarms. After a while, you\’ll be tempted you remove the batteries and leave your home without protection.

5 reasons your hot tub circuit breaker keeps tripping

5 reasons your hot tub circuit breaker keeps tripping

Having a hot tub at your Phoenix home should provide you with a great way to relax. When your hot tub circuit breaker keeps tripping, though, you might end up feeling more stressed overall. What are some reasons that this might be happening? Having a circuit breaker trip on a frequent basis can indicate a serious issue. These are some of the more common ones that might cause you to suddenly lose power to your hot tub.

Ground Fault Problem

Your hot tub should have a ground fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, breaker. This breaker automatically cuts off power to your hot tub to prevent electrical shock. The GFCI circuit breaker kicks in when unusual changes in the amount of power flowing through the circuit occur. You might have trouble with the GFCI circuit breaker tripping often for a few reasons. These include:

  • Problems with the GFCI that are making it faulty
  • Problems with a hot tub component or parts, such as a pump or heater
  • Incorrect wiring in your GFCI that needs to be corrected

Moisture Exposure

If the inside of the control box that houses your hot tub circuit breaker has moisture, this can cause the breaker to trip frequently. Moisture from condensation or rain can get inside these boxes. When this happens, the moisture can end up damaging electrical components inside the control box. You’ll need to have damaged parts replaced and ensure that the hot tub circuit breaker box is protected from additional moisture.

Heater Corrosion or Damage

Hot tub heaters can become corroded or damaged, resulting in a circuit breaker that keeps tripping when you want to use your hot tub. You might be able to notice signs of damage or corrosion in this part of your hot tub. If the heater does have damage, you might need to have it repaired or replaced.

Short Circuits

Short circuits can occur in one of the electrical parts of your hot tub. These short circuits cause your circuit breaker to trip in order to lower the risk of electrocution. If you have a short circuit, the affected part might feel warm. Keep in mind that this is a serious hazard since short circuits can cause fires and electrical shock. You should have a professional electrician repair this problem as soon as possible and avoid using your hot tub in the meantime.

Loose Electrical Connections

The electrical connections in your hot tub might become loose over time. This can lead to power fluctuations that cause your hot tub circuit breaker to trip. Professional electricians can inspect your hot tub and tighten any connections that are loose, which should fix the circuit breaker problem.

No matter what the cause of your circuit breaker trouble is, it’s important to leave it to the professionals. Handling electrical issues on your own puts you at risk of having a serious injury or property damage. The professionals at Turn It On Electric can determine what is causing the circuit breaker to trip and correct the problem safely so that you can get back to enjoying your hot tub.

4 considerations for your first EV charger

4 considerations for your first EV charger

Purchasing an electric vehicle helps you save a lot of money on gas. Since these cars need to be charged in order to run, having a home charging station available is highly convenient. Some gas stations and businesses offer places to charge electric cars. However, having an EV charger at home means you can ensure that your car stays fully charged and ready to go at all times. Keep the following in mind when it comes to choosing your first EV charger.

Types of Electric Vehicle Chargers

There are different types of EV chargers to choose from depending on your specific needs. EV chargers all feature a universal connector for electric cars with the exception of Tesla cars. Tesla vehicles have a modified version of this universal connector.

EV chargers are available in different power and amperage levels as well. You should make sure that you choose an EV charger that provides the amount of amperage and power your car needs. Keep in mind that different electric vehicles have varying maximum charging capacities.

In general, you should be looking at getting an EV charger that offers a charge of at least 30 amps. You’ll find different levels of chargers to choose from, including level 1 and level 2, which are the more commonly used types. These use AC power to charge your car. Levels 3 and 4 offer faster charging via a DC port rather than using onboard charging.

Costs of EV Chargers

The amount you can expect to spend on an EV charger varies based on different factors. While average costs can range from $500 to $700, you could pay quite a bit more or less depending on the kind you end up getting. For example, some of these chargers offer Wi-Fi connectivity that allows you to operate them from a mobile device. Having this feature can drive up the cost of your EV charger.

Location for an EV Charger

Where should your EV charger go? Keep in mind that you’ll be running cables to connect the charger and your car. Make sure that the location for your charger is in a convenient spot where you can easily connect your car to it. For example, consider having your charger installed on the side of the garage that you normally park in if you have a two-car garage.

The location of your charger affects how much electrical work you’ll need to have overall. Electricians might only need to run a few or couple feet of conduit as opposed to running longer lengths of conduit.

EV Charger Portability

Portability is an important factor to consider since it can affect the amount of electrical work you need to have done. Your options are to have your charger permanently installed in one place or have electricians install specialized outlets for it. If you have an outlet or two installed, you can plug in your charger at either spot.

If you don’t have a garage and need to have your charger installed outdoors, pay attention to local codes. You might need to have your EV charger hard-wired instead of having an outlet installed for it. Having your charger permanently installed this way can result in a higher installation cost.

If you’re considering buying your first electric vehicle, contact Turn It On Electric. We can help you learn more about your options for an EV charger for your Phoenix home.

Commercial LED lighting solutions for restaurants

Commercial LED lighting solutions for restaurants

When you run a restaurant, it’s important to make sure you have the right lighting. A casual, family-friendly restaurant typically needs to offer a cheerful, well-lit environment. An upscale dining establishment needs to create a more intimate mood for couples enjoying a night out. No matter what kind of atmosphere you need, commercial LED lighting can provide it.

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting refers to lights that create a certain mood or atmosphere in your restaurant. You can use commercial LED lighting that is softer to illuminate tables throughout your dining area. Having these lights over tables rather than all over the ceiling provides a more intimate effect for those who are dining. This is a good choice for restaurants that need to create a more romantic effect, such as high-end restaurants that couples frequent.

Commercial LED lighting can be spread out over larger areas overhead, such as when you need to create a more fun or lively atmosphere for your restaurant. This works well for restaurants that have a more casual setting, such as cafes, fast food restaurants, and family restaurants. This lighting provides plenty of illumination for customers and creates a comfortable atmosphere.

Accent Lighting

Does your restaurant have certain features that you would like to call attention to? Whether your high-end restaurant has artwork on the walls or your casual restaurant has eye-catching design features, commercial LED lighting can highlight these. You can place these LED lights in specific areas to draw the eye to these features.

Dimmable Lighting

Some types of commercial LED lighting have dimmable controls. These controls make it easier for you to manage how much light your restaurant has. For example, you can use these controls to make your restaurant brighter earlier in the day if you’re serving breakfast and coffee for customers. When dinnertime comes around, use these controls to soften the lighting in your restaurant. For the middle of the day, you can use a more moderate setting for the lunchtime crowd.

Lighting Fixtures

The types of LED lighting fixtures your restaurant has can enhance its appearance. Elegant pendant lighting with LED bulbs is a good option for upscale restaurants. Recessed LED lights that cover most of the ceiling over your dining area are a suitable option when you have a casual dining establishment.

Advantages of Commercial LED Lighting

Commercial LED lighting offers a few benefits for restaurant owners. This type of lighting can cost more upfront. However, these lights cut down on the amount of energy used for lighting restaurants overall. This leads to a decrease in energy bills, which can help you save money on running your business.

LED lights are known for lasting a lot longer compared to fluorescent or incandescent lights. Since they don’t need to be changed often, your business saves money on the cost of bulbs as well.

With LED lighting, you don’t have to worry about your bulbs flickering, either. This means you can count on having reliable, steady lighting for your customers. Steady lighting helps create a more pleasant dining environment.

If you’re ready to install commercial LED lighting in your business, please contact Turn It On Electric to discuss your options or request an estimate.

Recessed lights: pros and cons

Recessed lights: pros and cons

Recessed lights have been growing in demand with homeowners and business owners. These lights provide certain benefits that other types of lighting don’t. Before deciding whether or not to have these lights installed, it’s important for you to be familiar with their pros and cons. Keep the following in mind when determining if recessed lighting is the right choice for your home or business in the Phoenix area.

Pro: Lights Are “Hidden”

Recessed lights aren’t as noticeable as a hanging light fixture or other traditional ceiling fixtures. If you want to streamline the appearance of your office, reception area or living room ceiling without any bulky fixtures, recessed lighting is a good option. These lights are also ideal for areas with lower ceilings, such as basements. Since they’re out of the way, you don’t have to worry about bumping into them while walking around.

Pro: More Evenly Lit Rooms

Having recessed lighting installed means that you need to have several lights placed in different areas of the ceiling. This provides rooms with more even illumination, unlike a traditional overhead fixture that only illuminates the area near it. With more even lighting, you won’t end up with parts of the room that are dimmer. You can also rely on recessed lights to illuminate your entire kitchen for easier food preparation. Or light your whole living room so that you have enough light to read, no matter where you sit.

Pro: Recessed Lights Are Always in Style

Some types of lighting fixtures, such as track lighting or hanging fixtures, have styles and designs that change over time. Investing in these lights means that they’ll eventually look outdated. When you have recessed lighting, you don’t have to worry about it going out of style or needing to replace it for an updated look. While this might not matter as much in an out-of-the-way area, such as a basement, it can be a smart investment for kitchen or living room lighting.

Con: You Need a Lot of Recessed Lights for Good Lighting

One of the drawbacks of recessed lights is that each light only provides illumination in a limited area. To make sure that you have a room that is well lit, you need to have many of these lights installed in your ceiling. This involves more work in terms of the installation process and can affect the amount you spend overall, especially if you need them for a large room.

Con: Recessed Lighting Installation Is Complex

Some homeowners are able to install a traditional light fixture on their own. However, this isn’t a good idea with recessed lighting. This type of lighting needs to be carefully installed, which involves removing insulation in the area to reduce fire risks. You also need to make several holes in your ceiling for installation. Leaving this project to electrical professionals is the best way to ensure a proper and safe installation.

Con: Recessed Lights Can Leak Air

Since recessed lighting goes right into the ceiling, this can leave small gaps around each light. The gaps allow air to pass through, which can create drafts and affect the comfort of your home. Having professional electricians install recessed lights can help ensure that these gaps are properly sealed up.
